My experience in design ranges from editorial layout and art direction to environmental graphics and wayfinding for civil institutions as a designer for Mayer/Reed. I also teach Design Thinking to entry-level graphic design students at Portland State University. My values lie in a researched and holistic investigation of design problems in order to develop meaningful solutions. My favorite thing about design is its multi-disciplinary nature — I love to learn new things as I work with clients of different personal and professional backgrounds.
Vortex Music Magazine
Art direction and page layout for the quarterly magazine Vortex, which covers the Portland music scene.
Each cover involved steady collaboration with a photographer or illustrator to bring to life the theme of the issue. In my role, I updated the look and feel of interior pages and created unique feature layouts while working closely with the editor-in-chief.
Thematic concepting, art direction, page layout, and project management for Willamette Week’s 200+ page guide to the city’s cultural offerings.
Part guidebook and part yearbook, Finder tells the story of what Portland has to offer for both newcomers and longtime residents. In my role as art director, I worked closely with editor Lauren Yoshiko, along with many local photographers and illustrators, to capture the most beloved destinations for eating, drinking, shopping, and exploring in Portland.
To Be Determined
To Be Determined is a discussion and workshop group that I co-host with Nic Meier and Nimi Einstein. Recent workshops have been hosted through Design Week Portland on topics of chair building and personal cartographies.
Together, we research concepts for discussion, develop workshop “curriculums” and facilitate the events. We encourage design inquiry in a casual and humble setting.
From 2017 to 2018 I was the Special Sections art director for Portland’s original alt-weekly newspaper. In my role, I was the primary designer of 7 glossy magazines, released every 2-3 months with in-depth features of restaurants, beer, bars, cannabis, and outdoor recreation. I wrote detailed assignments for illustrators and photographers. For covers and large features, I worked closely with the photographer on site or in studio.
My daily duties at Willamette Week also included assisting with design of the weekly newspaper, working with writers and reporters, editors, copy-editors, ad reps, and other members of the creative team.
